India looses the solar subsidy case at WTO against US

India lost the solar subsidy case at WTO against US. Last year, the US filed a case against India to WTO on country’s solar mission plan. The US alleged that India’s solar mission appears to discriminate against the US solar equipment by promoting solar energy producers to use locally manufactured cells. The US considers it unfair that India requires solar power producers to use locally manufactured cells and give subsidies to developers following these conditions.

US won the case as WTO came up with decision that India’s subsidies for solar power contravene WTO trade rules. India must now remove the subsidies or face trade sanctions. India will now appeal against the decision to the ruling of WTO’s dispute panel in the next two months, an official said.

An official from the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry said “We will appeal against the judgment at WTO’s highest court, the appellate body, which could give us two years’ reprieve.”
